Once, during a descent in a fell race, I even stopped to watch in bewilderment the madness happening around (and sometimes seemingly overhead). But it is definitely growing on me. I agree that the UTMB trail is pretty tame with regards to technicality, but it was generally pretty steep from what I remember. The fell running in the UK last Xmas was off the charts for both grade and - in places - technicality.

Anon - with regards to Kilimanjaro, there have been so few attempts at the speed record there that it is hard to say where Kilian's time really stands. I'm sure it is super stout, but without any real points of reference that's about all we can say.

And the runnable 'gentle' nature of Pikes is exactly why I think Kilian will not be setting any records there. Did it seem like the race was representative of the sort of terrain the Europeans spend most of their time training on? Watch out.

Brett - two very different races, but I have to say that I was hugely impressed with KJ's effort at Zegama. Yes, he knows the course well and excels on technical terrain, but I figured the conditions were worth - at a minimum - 10 minutes at the pointy end of the field. Not so for Kilian apparently, as his time was just a few ticks off the CR and right in line with his other efforts there.

On Pikes - I say he runs up in something between 2:08-2:10 and comes down in close to record pace. So total RT in the 3:25 range. I guess I wouldn't be surprised if he goes faster, but I'm comfortable predicting that the CR will not go down: I just don't think he's a strong enough climber on such runnable terrain. Not when you consider the history of runners that have raced up Pikes.Nickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07768257304687597320noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4241238297532213032.post-68575217694402622022012-06-07T10:51:30.124-07:002012-06-07T10:51:30.124-07:00I would be interested in hearing what you think Ki...I would be interested in hearing what you think Kilian's 3h58m Zegama effort in those conditions might translate into at Pikes Peak.Bretthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02376446409534942024noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4241238297532213032.post-28094051090562346242012-06-07T10:01:11.746-07:002012-06-07T10:01:11.746-07:00It's definitely because you're getting old...It's definitely because you're getting old!browniehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09505392867686096325noreply@blogger.com
